Newburgh Seal Viewing Experience Project
Phase two of the Newburgh Seal Viewing Experience Project is due for completion in September 2024.
The new low level all abilities boardwalk is nearing completion with the bench now built into the viewing platform. Work is ongoing where the new boardwalk meets the existing recycled boardwalk. McGowan’s the contractor is awaiting more timber to finish the 308 metres of boardwalk. Already folks are enjoying it and feedback from wheelchair users has been very positive.
Non-slip material has also been added to the existing boardwalk and the high level viewpoint slightly extended and the erosion around it restored with the planting of marram grass.
Our grant application to the Aberdeenshire Council Sharing Prosperity Fund, has covered 90% of the costs.
“This view northwards over the Ythan Estuary has inspired generations of creatives, but perhaps none more so than artist-adventurer James McBey (1883-1959). McBey was raised within sight of the River Ythan before becoming an internationally-acclaimed painter & etcher. This 1914 McBey etching, “Newburgh”, depicts many of the sites which can still be seen from the high-level viewpoint today, such as Knockhall Castle, the 16th century ruin which, visible north-west in the far off distance, first inspired McBey’s love of art as a child”.
Accessibility and Protection
With already increasing visitor numbers, it is anticipated these measures will mitigate the current erosion and threats to the flora and fauna by encouraging folks to keep to pathways and enjoy their experience to such an environmentally sensitive and beautiful area.
